Create a gentler evening routine
An evening routine can help you make space for rest, even when sleep itself is not fully under your control. Begin with one practical change, such as preparing tomorrow's essentials earlier or choosing a consistent time to begin winding down. Shift work, caregiving, and health conditions may require a different approach.
Make it practical
Notice which evening activities leave you feeling settled and which tend to delay bedtime. You might lower unnecessary light, put work materials away, or choose a quiet activity. Avoid treating the routine as another performance target. If the plan has ten steps, try reducing it to the one or two that are most useful.
Leave room to adapt
Persistent sleep difficulties, loud snoring with breathing pauses, or excessive daytime sleepiness deserve clinical advice. General routines cannot diagnose or treat a sleep disorder. In your weekly review, record whether you created an opportunity for rest and what got in the way. This is more actionable than criticizing yourself for a night that did not go as hoped.
